Sustainable Floral Design

Sustainable development is the development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.

Description

Sustainable development is the development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.

During this class we will discuss ‘green principles’ within the floristry industry and look at what sustainability means to you.  We will explore how to apply these principles in the floristry profession and how to communicate the three primary components of green design to our customers.

Purchasing botanical materials which have been grown in a sustainable manner and how to read product labels to ensure sustainability, will form part of this course as well as looking at recycling, re-purposing and re-fabricating materials.  A range of biodegradable containers and mechanics which are commonly used in Europe will be available to see and work with during the course.  We will also look at foraging botanical materials which are ‘on your doorstep’, that could be used in commercial floral design.

The differences between biodegradability and sustainability will be discussed and together we will work on your own business or personal pyramid which will help you achieve your future sustainable goals.

The practical element of this course is hands-on, and tutor led where you will be shown techniques which will enable you to develop sustainable best working practices to help you protect our vulnerable environment through your working practices.
