Description

A practical, inspiring workshop exploring how sustainable thinking can transform the way we design, source and work with flowers.

“Sustainable development is development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.”

Sustainability is becoming increasingly important within the floristry industry, and this engaging, hands-on workshop will explore how green principles can be incorporated into everyday floral design and professional practice.

Throughout the day, we will look beyond simply choosing “eco-friendly” products and consider what sustainability really means within floristry. You will discover practical ways to reduce waste, make thoughtful purchasing decisions, use natural resources responsibly and create beautiful designs with a lighter environmental footprint.

What You’ll Learn

  • The principles of sustainable floristry
Understand what sustainability means within the floral industry and consider what it means to you, your clients and your business.

  • The three key components of green design
Learn how sustainable principles can influence your design choices and how to confidently communicate these ideas to clients.

  • Responsible sourcing
Explore how botanical materials can be grown and sourced sustainably, and learn how to interpret product labels and claims so you can make more informed purchasing decisions.

  • Reduce, reuse and reimagine
Discover creative approaches to recycling, repurposing and refabricating materials, helping to reduce waste while developing innovative design solutions.

  • Sustainable mechanics and containers
Experiment with a selection of biodegradable containers, reusable mechanics and decorative materials, considering both their environmental impact and their practical applications.

  • Foraging with purpose
Explore the potential of locally available botanical materials and discover how the natural resources around you can inspire commercially viable floral designs — while considering responsible and ethical foraging practices.

  • Biodegradable vs. sustainable
Understand why these terms are not interchangeable and learn how to make more informed choices when selecting materials for floral work.

  • Sustainability in your own practice
Develop realistic and achievable sustainability goals for your floristry business, workplace or personal creative practice.

A hands-on learning experience

This is not simply a day of theory. The workshop is designed to be practical, interactive and tutor-led, giving you the opportunity to experiment with sustainable materials and techniques throughout the day.

You will develop practical skills and ideas that can be taken straight back into your own floristry practice, helping you create designs that are not only beautiful and innovative, but also more considerate of our vulnerable environment.

Whether you are a professional florist, budding designer, student or simply passionate about flowers and sustainability, this workshop will give you practical knowledge, inspiration and achievable ideas for making a positive change.

By the end of the workshop, you will:

  • Have a greater understanding of sustainability within floristry.

  • Be able to identify opportunities to reduce waste in your floral practice.

  • Understand the difference between biodegradable and genuinely sustainable materials.

  • Feel more confident assessing botanical products and sustainability claims.

  • Have explored alternative mechanics, containers and design materials.

  • Understand the principles of responsible local foraging.

  • Have developed personal or business sustainability goals.

  • Take away practical techniques and ideas that can be incorporated into future floral designs.
